Many women today say they want a man who leads. Many men hear that and picture giving orders. That misreads it. The leadership women respond to looks more like a good captain than a tyrant.

What leadership looks like day to day

  • Initiative. He suggests the plan, books the table, arranges the trip.
  • Decision. When a choice is stuck, he makes the call and owns the result.
  • Vision. He thinks about where the two of them are going: finances, faith, family, and home.
  • Responsibility. When things go wrong, he looks first at what he could have done better.

What leadership is not

  • Ignoring her wishes. A good leader gathers input before deciding.
  • Controlling her friends, money, or time.
  • Demanding respect without earning it.
  • Never admitting fault.

Servant leadership

Scripture's picture of a husband's headship is striking. It is modeled on Christ, who used his authority to serve and to sacrifice. The man goes first, and he goes first into the hard things: the difficult conversation, the extra work, the apology. That is leadership a woman can relax into, because it is aimed at her good.

Consult, then decide

Strong couples talk things through. Ask for her view, especially in areas where she knows more than you. Weigh it seriously. Then, when a decision is needed, make it, and never punish her if it goes badly. Sometimes the best decision is to follow her lead. A secure man can do that without feeling smaller.

Signs your leadership is working

  • She feels safe bringing you problems.
  • She disagrees openly, and you can still decide together.
  • She tests you less over time.
  • Your home feels calmer, not tenser.
